This was a very well supported conference, brought together jointly by York City Council, and the Federation of Small Businesses. I received two invitations to attend and regarded it as important to do so, both as Ward councillor, and as a member of F.S.B.

Of course York has had flooding problems for centuries, but there were also delegates from many northern areas as far afield as Sheffield and Durham.

The discussion centred around the problems encountered by companies affected by flooding, but residential flooding issues were frequently referred to. In particular, people were keen to know just when some solution would be reached in connection with flood insurance for homeowners. The Statement of Principles, (the agreement between the Government and the Insurance Companies to ensure people had access to insurance at a fair price) actually expires on 30th June, but if that isn't renewed, or replaced, what then?

Matthew Cullen, one of the speakers is a senior executive of the Assoc. of British Insurers. He has been involved in discussions with Government officials for 2 years, admits to being baffled by the recent lack of response from Whitehall. They have been expecting a final agreement to be announced every fortnight since Christmas, but still nothing firm comes forth!

Maybe there's some form of brinksmanship taking place, but if something isn't sorted soon there will be a big problem for many many householders across the country, including many in our area. Without insurance, properties previously flooded, or just in flood risk areas, may become virtually unsaleable, except at drastically reduced values.

Congratulations to each of the above winners, I am sure they are very proud to have received such recognition. People like Harry and Ernie, and organisations like Vivergo contribute so much to our communities, and it's only right they should be take credit for their work and dedication..
