Parish Council Websites – a Review

PARISH COUNCILS are the bastions of local democracy in the HU12 area – but they really should be easily accessible online.

HU12 Online has provided a list of Parish Councils in the area on its Home Page (right sidebar). Most of these link to the East Riding Council website information which is due an update. However, there are some notable exceptions where councils have got their own websites. We give a basic review here:

Burstwick Parish Council – potentially has a good website, but at the time of writing states that the last update was in 2009.

Hedon Town Council has its own website which was updated and modernised in June 2010. You can access councillors details but online minutes are not always kept up-to-date. The website is also used as the main (official) source of historic and other information about the town.

Keyingham Parish Council website is up-to-date. You can download recent council minutes and get the details of your local parish councillors.

Paull Parish Council website is up-to-date and is one of the few that makes it very clear that the press and public are invited to council meetings. It also lists the committees that each of the councillors sit on and have responsibility for. Looks a bit odd in my browser (Google Chrome) so had to use Internet Explorer to view properly. Downloading minutes did not seem as straightforward as other websites.

Roos Parish Council website has councillors details, easy to download minutes, and a useful events calendar. It is also home to online versions of the magnificent Rooster parish newsletter.

Skeffling Parish Council information is hosted by the fantastic Skeffling Community Website. Minutes are published on the website rather than linking to another file, councillors details reveal that they really are a ‘super’ team, and addition you have a wealth of community information about the village!  HU12 Recommends this!

Skirlaugh Parish Council includes some information as part of – but some of the basic parish council information does not seem readily available.

Keyingham Parish Council website makes minutes of meetings available and councillors contact phone numbers are published. There is some broader community information and news available as well.

Our comment: By far the best approach to a Parish Council website would appear to be the Skeffling Community model. The official council information is there – but there are lots of other reasons to visit the website as well!
