European Open Beach Championships logoWITH A WEEK to go, East Yorkshire’s coastal businesses have been finalising preparations for the influx of over 1,000 competitors and a £250,00 boost to the local economy thanks to the World’s largest 3-day beach angling festival.

The record-breaking European Open Beach Championship attracts participants from all over the UK and throughout Europe with anglers from a dozen different countries taking part.

European Open Beach Championship
Friday 8th – Sunday 10th March 2013
Sand-Le-Mere Holiday Village Tunstall, East Yorkshire

Entries from Luxembourg and Poland have recently been confirmed for the first time ever in the competition, all hoping to land the big catch and a share of the £35,000 prize fund.

The competition, which this year celebrates its 20th Anniversary, is widely regarded as the best of its kind anywhere in Europe and is a huge boost for the many businesses in the region that benefit from the event.

Hotels, guest houses and caravan parks along the East Yorkshire coast have been reporting a huge surge in business for the weekend of the competition whilst pubs, restaurants, night clubs and taxi firms are all ready for the much-needed out of season boost.

Keith Lamming, owner of East Coast Fishing Tackle in Hornsea said, “The European Open Beach has always been hugely popular and a really busy time for us, but this year it seems to have improved yet further. The competition has developed so much over the last 10 years and now with the interest from across Europe we are getting enquiries every day.”

“It kicks the year off well for us and I know a lot of the local pubs and guest houses are exactly the same. Few businesses can say they have their busiest trading period at the beginning of March.”

The EOBC festivities begin on the evening of Thursday 7th March in the new championship headquarters of Sand-Le-Mere Holiday Village, Tunstall with the official welcome of the competitors. This is followed by the eagerly anticipated EOBC Flattie Bash on the afternoon of Friday 8th March.

This 4 hour catch and release match held on Hornsea North Beach is the ideal preparation for the weekend’s main competition held on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th March. The overall winner will drive away with a brand new Peugeot 107 and a large share of the £35,000 prize fund.

Although this Festival of Beach Fishing now attracts the cream of European shore angling it remains true to its original values of offering a fun and enjoyable event for all the family that is open and accessible to all.

With separate sections dedicated to junior girls and boys as well as senior women’s and men’s competitions, the fully inclusive nature of the event really makes it stand out.

Tickets are available for the competition and can be purchased at the East Yorkshire Events website until 10.00am *Tuesday 5th March 2013.
