Help someone get connected – Give an hour on Sunday 30th October
| October 12, 2011 | Posted by Editor under Campaigns, Events |
GO ON – GIVE AN HOUR running from 22nd October – 12th November 2011, will be the biggest consumer-focused campaign to date devoted to inspiring, encouraging and supporting the UK to become a truly networked nation – and help one of the 8.7 million people who are missing out on the benefits of the internet to get online!
On Sunday 30th October 2011 the clocks go back and everyone in the UK has an extra hour. On that day,the 30 million people who use the internet everyday, are being asked to use this extra hour to transform someone’s life by helping them get online.
The idea is to use that Sunday to introduce friends, relatives and neighbours who you know are not online – and introduce them to the wonders of the internet! You might encourage them to:
- Find the latest news and sport on the BBC or find very local news on a local community website like the Hedon Blog

- Show someone the street they grew up on using Google Street View
- Show off hundreds of free films on YouTube or TV shows on iPlayer
- Watch trailers and see what’s on at your local cinema
- Thousands of recipe ideas from great chefs
- See photos of just about anything on Flickr
- Learn about places across the globe on TripAdvisor
- Use the Google Product Search to compare prices
- Read restaurants reviews and book tables on TopTable
- Discover plans and ideas on how to get fit
The secret is to find what people are interested in, and then show them how they can use the internet to find out more about it!
Once you have helped and inspired someone to use the internet for the first time, then this will be followed by a month of taster sessions (largely run by UK online and BBC First Click centres), which internet beginners can attend if they can’t find someone to help them and want to try it out .
So GO ON – Give an hour! Pledge your help today!

My tip for those getting online for the first time today (and also useful for those who have been online for some time!):
Get OpenOffice from http://www.openoffice.org/
It’s a FREE software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.
OpenOffice Writer is the word processing software. It looks a bit different to Word but is just as good as – if not better than – the Microsoft paid-for product.
OpenOffice can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.
