POLICE OFFICERS from the Holderness Neighbourhood Policing Team are launching a new initiative, Bike Wise, aimed at keeping pedal cyclists safe as they use the roads in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Bike Wise will involve police officers offering a special seminar to those found causing a risk to road safety and breaking the law. It will be an alternative to a £30 fixed penalty notice or summons to court and will aim to educate cyclists in road safety.
The sessions will be given by local neighbourhood officers and present appropriate cycle safety equipment and information to those selected to attend.
Although the number of cyclists killed and seriously injured in the East Riding over the last three years has seen reductions, the total number of injuries to cyclist as a result of collisions or careless riding has increased slightly.
Sergeant Phil Hinch from the Holderness Neighbourhood Team said: “It’s pleasing to see the numbers of fatalities and serious injuries to cyclists reducing but the overall increase in injuries suggests that some cyclists are still prepared to ride carelessly, potentially putting themselves and other road users at risk of injury or worse. Whilst cycling without lights and failing to observe traffic signals may seem relatively harmless, the consequences of any road user engaging in such behaviour can be dire. Cyclists, in particular can be vulnerable road users, and by overlooking simple safety measures take the chance of increasing their risk of injury.”
Within the half an hour seminar attendees will be offered a talk from Holderness Police Officers, be shown a DVD on road safety, educated on the dangers of not using suitable lights on their cycle and they will have the opportunity to have their bikes post coded.
The Seminars will take place in Hedon in conjunction with Hedon Youth Initiative.
