No Comments

FOLLOWING a review of its decision making processes,  Humberside Fire Authority is currently looking to appoint five new independent members to join its new Governance, Audit and Scrutiny Committee.

The Committee’s role is primarily to help the Authority to:

  • review the performance of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service;
  • oversee internal control arrangements;
  • consider internal and external audit reports and assessments;
  • review governance scrutinise proposed decisions in advance of the Fire Authority meetings.

The Fire Authority comprises representatives from each of the four Humberside local councils (East Riding, Hull, NE Lincolnshire and N Lincolnshire), but the new Committee is to be made up of eight independent non-voting members, with five being recruited initially.

HFRS web snipRobin Graham, Secretary to the Authority and Director of People, said: “These new roles are important and provide a real opportunity to make an active contribution to the Fire Authority. Although the Independent Members will not have any voting rights, they will add value by their objectivity. This will assist the Authority to make decisions, ultimately helping to keep our communities safer.”

Applicants will need to have high standards of integrity with expertise in audit, or financial governance or performance or decision-making. They will bring their wise counsel to meetings, and by way of recommendations from the Committee, to Elected Members and assist in the review of reports from Officers, and internal/external audit.

As well as contributing to the effectiveness of the Authority, each new Committee member will be entitled to claim a small annual allowance.

Closing date for applications is Wednesday 25th July 2012.
