WITHERNSEA COASTGUARD Team members were joined by Graham Stuart MP for a presentation of Diamond Jubilee Medals recently.

The Diamond Jubilee Medal is awarded to members of the Armed Forces, Emergency Service, and HM Prison Service who have completed over five years of service. On Tuesday 28th August 2012 Graham Stuart presented medals to six members of the Withernsea Coastguard Team.

Mr Stuart said, “I was honoured to be asked to present these medals to the Withernsea Coastguard team who all deserve commendation for their dedication to the service which is responsible for search and rescue and safety around the coastline.

“One of the Coastguard team to receive a medal was Ann Bell, who is the 4th generation of her family to serve in the Coastguard in Withernsea, with her father Ian and his twin brother Ray both also serving, as well as her grandfather and great-grandfather before them. In total the family have clocked up over 120 years of service with Ann serving on the team for the past 16 years. Ann is expecting her second baby in September who may also choose to carry on the family tradition and form the next generation of the Coastguard.”

Ann said, “My husband is a RNLI crew member at Withernsea and there is regular banter in our family about whether our daughter would join the Coastguard or the RNLI. Now that we have a second child on the way they can do one each.”
